Sober Curious? What it is and how to do it

Have you ever noticed that you don’t feel your best after drinking alcohol? Maybe you feel tired, scattered, stressed, or even sad.

Alcohol can have a different impact on everyone and it can change its impact in various stages of your life too. Maybe you used to feel great after drinking and now you don’t. This is common, especially as we age, and a reason we’re seeing sober curiousness starting to become more popular.

Even if you feel alcohol doesn’t impact you in a negative way, it seems as though more and more people are deciding to opt for alcohol alternatives due to personal preference.

We’re not here to tell you what to do or what not to do but with anything in life, it is important to be conscious of what we are choosing out of joy vs out of a habit that may or may not is serving us.

So what is Sober Curious?

Sober curious is a coined word combining “sober”, which means a state without influence (in this case, alcohol), and the word “curious”, which means being curious.

Someone who can physically drink alcohol but chooses not to or only in small quantities can be classified as sober curious. Some do it for health reasons, beauty, the better quality of sleep, productivity, etc.

You may want to also consider being sober curious if you experience any of the following

  • If you drink alcohol out of habit

  • If you drink alone often to relieve stress

  • If you drink alcohol and feel sick the next day

  • If you have no hobbies you devote yourself to

  • If you want to lose body fat

It doesn’t hurt to try being sober and reducing your alcohol intake. You may find new things that could bring you joy, pick up a new hobby, find an alternative method to healthily release your stress, or feel better and healthier in your own body. When you have other things that fulfill you in life, alcohol will naturally hold less power over you.

On the other hand, if you fall under any of these categories, you may choose not to be sober curious:

  • You like the aroma and taste of alcohol

  • You like spending time with friends and family while drinking

  • You have other things you love outside of alcohol

  • You physically can’t consume alcohol to begin with

If you feel you have good things going for you in your life and you are happy and enjoy alcohol as an extra on the occasion for a bit of comfort and fun, you should be able to incorporate alcohol in a well-balanced manner.

However if you decide to give it a go, and if you’re new to being sober curious, you may want to  have some options to replace alcohol to make the transition more comfortable.

1. Carbonated water and fruit juice

Carbonated water is a great alternative to the fizziness of unhealthy pop and soda, especially if you opt for one that only has water as the ingredient. Mixing this with fruit juice that is naturally sweet can be a great replacement for your tequila sunrise, but without the tequila and lower in calories!

2. R’s KOSO mocktail

Another option that not only can help satisfy your cocktail cravings but also help boost your gut health is one of our delicious mocktails using R’s KOSO prebiotic, probiotic, and postbiotic drinks. You can find recipes on our website and youtube. You’ll be surprised at how tasty and satisfying they are, and your body will thank you. It’s a win-win!

Postbiotic cranberry virgin mojito

We hope this blog post helped you see how simple and fun being sober curious can be, should you give it a go. Remember that you don’t need a reason to explain yourself, it doesn’t hurt to try it and you never know what you might discover about yourself.

Let's get started!
